The secret to true wellbeing

What do you feel you should be doing?

That was the question asked of me during a recruitment process six years ago by the company’s young and attractive life coach. Dressed to the nine and exuding a cool hipster vibe complete with an old-school pocket watch, he looked at me with earnest eyes that saw too much. Prior to this discussion, I had never even heard of a life coach, never mind speaking to one. But the owner of the advertising start-up that wanted to hire me certainly did and even built in such a talk in the hiring process.

Introduction

Hi there! I’m Ana Maria Radulescu, but I go by A.M.Radulescu, a subconscious nod to the Potterhead within me. As a teenager, I used to spend most of my money on fantasy and Sci-Fi books. Even back then my dream was to one day see my name on a library display. And even though life took a different course for about 15 years I never forgot that yearning, and I never stopped reading. I guess other things needed to happen first, to mold me into the person I am today and for that journey, I will always be grateful.

From adversity to opportunity

Many of us have reached a point in life when anxiety was running rampant, making your heart beat an uncomfortable staccato rhythm, palms dripping, lungs constricting painfully, with oxygen supply dangerously low.

To cite the Encyclopedia of Psychology:

Anxiety is an emotion characterized by feelings of tension, worried thoughts, and physical changes like increased blood pressure.

People with anxiety disorders usually have recurring intrusive thoughts or concerns. They may avoid certain situations out of worry. They may also have physical symptoms such as sweating, trembling, dizziness, or a rapid heartbeat.

Let’s face it, anxiety is hard, making you live a…

Call of the wild

Scotland’s mountains and valleys, with a small cottage in the wilderness

On Scotland

Scotland has been a source of inspiration thanks to its beautiful landscapes, vast history, and rich culture. From the enchanting Isle of Skye, to its mesmerizing capital of Edinburgh, and the vastness of its wilderness, the land of Scots has captured the imagination of commoners and kings, minstrels and travelers, young and old. J.K.Rowling once said:

“It is one of the most hauntingly beautiful places in the world, the history is fascinating, the men are handsome, and the whiskey is delicious.”

In its 2000 years of recorded history, Scotland has fought tooth and nail for its place in the annals…

A poem about homecoming

Photo by Luke Stackpoole on Unsplash

Hello? Is there anybody in there?
Is there anyone home?
No, you’re gone.
Gone, chasing cardboard dreams
Always conforming to society’s schemes.

Where are you now?
Can you even hear me?
Lost in the static
Slave to the matrix
Twisting and turning
And never aligning.
How could you though,
When you’re not whole?

A ghost in the shell
A dead man walking
Who doesn’t even know.
Who can’t separate the yes from the no
The self, from the show.
A faded picture of what was meant to be
Before life bent your knee.

Can you feel it?
The optical illusion ingrained…

And how it can change yours too

Let me ask you a question. Have you ever felt that something’s a little off in your life but you can’t put your finger on it? A puzzle piece missing that distorts the overall picture. An inexplicable unease. A pull, a stirring, a whisper. Maybe even something like Sehnsucht, the nostalgic yearning of German construct C.S.Lewis described as “the inconsolable longing for what we know not what.” Raise your hand if anything, anything at all strikes a cord. Yes, I figured as much.

Personally, there were many times when I wished for Aslan’s far-away country, without having any real notion…

Is in my dreams

Photo by Илья Мельниченко on Unsplash

My favorite place to write
is in my dreams.
In an in-between.
My favorite place to write
is not actually a place
but a state of mind
a melding of thought, feeling,
and insight.
My favorite place to write
is not a chair or a couch
a bed or anything else for me to lounge.
My favorite place to write
is that space when the mind is clear
and instinct can reign supreme.
My favorite place to write
is the realm of divine connection
of limitless inspiration.
My favorite place to write is me.

One line or two?

Photo by Roman Wimmers on Unsplash

Have you ever experienced those excruciating moments before the pregnancy test works its magic? One line or two? One line or two? That agonizing wait, while you’re on the precipice, caught in a state of in-between, is the worst. It can go one way or another, there’s a 50–50 chance (or more accurately, a black-or-white conclusion). Maybe you’re not a gambling person, but still, you can’t help calculating the odds as the seconds tick by slower than a turtoise on vacation.

You check the instructions again — 5 minutes. Yes, you knew that. A 5 minutes wait before the great…

I thank you

Dear Jason Momoa (sure, that‘s not your real name but that of your hero),

The day you told me that you weren’t feeling it a piece of me died. You said that something was off, that your former relationship ended abruptly and left things unfinished, making you wonder if there wasn’t anything left to do, a fire to rekindle. You confessed on that arctic winter day that you owed it to yourself to try. As the harsh winds froze the tears on my cheeks, my heart contracted painfully. It was all so sudden, so unexpected. I thought that everything was…
